Action Items - Here is how you can help!

1. Send messages to Chancellor Leavitt (leavitt@uwosh.edu; 920-424-0200, 800 Algoma Blvd, Oshkosh, WI 54901) imploring that UWO leave the contents of the Barlow, Weis, CAC Children's Center, and Community Gardens. when they cease operation at the campus.

Rationale: No matter how often it's said, it's critical to remember that the moveable equipment belongs to UWO.

2. Write to the County Execs, UWO Fox Cities Trustees, and your County Supervisors requesting that the counties use funds they will receive from the state to support the campus-based Community Assets. While the entire Fox campus is a community asset, the Barlow Planetarium, Children’s Center, Communication Arts Center, Community Garden, and the Weis Earth Science Museum provide services which are particularly unique and valuable to our community. County contact information is found here.

Rationale: The governor has pledged that each community (in our case, that will be Outagamie and Winnebago Counties) will receive $2 million as compensation for losing their UW campus. Implore them to listen to the community support and use these funds to support the community assets that were funded in part by local private donations.

3. Advocate for the creation of a 501(c)3 or a Community endowment to oversee and support the community assets. This will require support and coordination of other non-profit organizations that currently utilize the assets.

Rationale: An endowment will help sustain and perpetuate these community assets as a resource for the community groups that use them thereby improving the quality of life in our community now and into the future.

4. Write a Letter to the Editor expressing the desire to keep the community assets open at the campus for the community citing benefits you identify from your personal experience.

Rationale: An endowment will help sustain and perpetuate these community assets as a resource for the community groups that use them thereby improving the quality of life in our community now and into the future.

5. Share our website (https://savethefoxcampus.com) and any posts about our activity on whatever social media is used, and encourage your friends to sign up to help via the website.

Rationale: Public awareness helps achieve success. Keeping the public informed via Letters to the Editor and through social media is vital towards building awareness and support.

6. Implore UWO, the Counties and the future users of the campus to keep the Weis Earth Science Museum and its contents at its current site. Request that this be a priority in the negotiations that are taking place.

Rationale: Len and Donna Weis gave $1+ million to create an endowment that is used to fund the museum director's salary. However, this original agreement states that "If UW-Fox Valley closes, the endowment is to be shifted to the Weis Ecology Center in New Jersey." Moving the contents of the museum to another site is neither practical nor desirable. The Barlow and Weis work together. When schools bring their students, they go to both the Barlow and Weis, paying the transportation costs for just one place.

7. Contact Governor Evers (https://evers.wi.gov/Pages/connect.aspx) and state legislators*, indicating your support for keeping the Weis Earth Science Museum (WESM) available for educational use by local schools and the public at the present site.

Rationale: The WESM is designated at the official State Mineralogical Museum. It is used heavily by our K-12 schools for field trips for hands on education about geology, state mining, and the evolution of life on our planet. Schools can “double dip” by bringing their students to both the Barlow Planetarium and WESM. Much of the collection belongs to the UWO and could be removed, leaving only loaned specimens. No county or state money was used to fund the WESM; this museum truly belongs to the people of our community.
